There is information on the platform which tells you the train itinery and also a picture of the train, so you know we're the first class cars are located.
The train actually goes to Vienna but we change to another train about 45minutes from Salzburg. The trip took about 2 hours 12 minutes. There are several tunnels through the mountains. Teenagers use the train to get to school. They carry a pass with their picture on it. No yellow school buses in sight!
Once arrived at the train station, you walk down a hill to the lake where a boat awaits to take you across. Hallstatt is nestled along the lake and climbs up the mountain in the back.
We stopped for lunch at one of the hotel restaurants. We had wiener snitzel with cranberries. This was to fortify us for the trip up to the observation deck.
You can rent a swan boat to go out on the lake.
We had to walk to one end of the town to find the cable car to the top. It was 838 meters to the top. That is 2749 feet. My ears popped going up. The observation deck juts out into nothing. Not for anyone afraid of heights.
